Dear all,

Just to come back to the discussion and try to take things forward, for those interested in being part of the Data Privacy and Protection subgroup, the current list of names include:

  • Michael Flemming
  • Yaling Tan
  • Kuowei Wu (who will also be inviting someone from Taiwan)
  • Satish Babu

Anyone else would like to join? For starters we can start a separate email thread, or group chat (e.g. on Skype or any preferred mode of IM). We can facilitate based on the preference. As suggested earlier, this group can discuss this issue in depth, and will also be the lead discussants for the next APAC Space session in July.

I’d also read a couple of suggestions for other subgroups. If there is strong interest from a few we can also start them; or as suggested by others we can form them “on demand” (e.g. when the topic for the September APAC Space is being decided the subgroup could be formed based on that).

Agree, the subgroup should be created on demand.

As to the subgroups, since lots of people are interested in the subsequent rounds application, I’d suggest we set up that group too, and then we can delve into sub topics that might be of mutual interests for APAC participants.

Agree with Michael.

This should be a rather free flowing space, so it should be easy to form subgroups, no need to make all of them at once, and can create on demand.

That being said... we still need one or two to get started :-D so what are relevant subgroups?

So far there is 1:

- Data Privacy/Protection

But if it is just 1... then we can just use this list :-D... Until people want to opt out because we are talking too much about the topic...

Hi Rohit,

I think we should focus on subgroups only where there is a request for one. Rather than penning down how many possible subgroups we might need, lets leave it open to a request and support system. If we have jot down a list of how many sub groups we might need, then many people might get confused and not know what to join or why. I also fear we might be exhausting resources on trying to formulate a subgroup where there is a lack of interest.

If we were a specific interest group with a similar objective, then that would probably work. However, this is a community forum, rather than a stakeholder group mailing list. Our interests and positions are very different from each other but can be grouped together when there is an overlap of interests between the different parties.

I just think a simpler approach would be best rather than going all out at once.

Michael Flemming

Dear All,

I support the sub group concept.

Just before moving forward I would like to suggest to Jia, Edmon and all active members to pen down the name (and numbers) of sub group(s) which we might need.

For example.

(i) sub group for TLD discuss

(ii) sub group for policy process

.

.

After this we can ask the enthusiastic people to opt for their discussion point which group they feel comfortable to join. And when they are accustomed, they can move to other sub group to learn other things.

Feel free to negate if I'm wrong anywhere.

Thanks all,

As mentioned during the call on subgroups, would suggest that a ‘subgroup’ be formed for those interested to discuss this topic in depth. The subgroup can then be the lead for our next APAC Space in sharing about this topic, and highlighting areas of interest particularly for the APAC region. Following the sharing/presentation, we will continue with the community discussion, which Edmon can facilitate as usual (unless there are other takers).

So in this case if we’re going for Data Privacy/Protection, within this mailing list those interested can form a subgroup. If required, I can provide a call bridge/adobe connect for this subgroup to discuss or share information in depth (although Skype or a group chat might be more nimble for a smaller group), and also to plan what to share at the next APAC Space. Then at the next APAC Space this subgroup will be our community leads to highlight this topic.

If this works then this might be the way to increase volunteerism for future APAC Space sessions. Different people would be interested/involved in different topics, so as the topics change we will have different people come forward to take the lead.

My 2 cents for consideration please.

Hi Michael,

I have no objection if the group wishes to cover this topic for the purpose of raising awareness.

My experience is that there is a lot of general information available online and lots of discussions within the ICANN community. But when it comes to compliance with GDPR or other privacy/data protection laws, the devil is in the detail. So even though there are many so-called "experts" in privacy laws, few are familiar with the domain industry, let alone each registry's or registrar's idiosyncracies. And in the case of China, there are additional complexities.

Kind regards,

Pam

This is to continue the topic about the next APAC space topic. On the call, I proposed the topic of Data Privacy/Protection as an topic of interest. More specifically, I looked at discussing about the GDPR and how it affects us here in Asia.

Pam,

You brought up a very good point about how this is being discussed as a co-RySG (Registry Stakeholder Group / RrSG (Registrar Stakeholder Group effort to seek a path forward with ICANN. I know that a discussion on this in the APAC space would be very broad. I also agree that each organization should seek their own legal advice. However, merely having the discussion itself on a broad level will spread awareness. I think that there are still a lot of individuals who are not aware of the GDPR and how or if it may affect them.

Any feedback?

Regards,

Michael Flemming
