The specific requirements for RGP will usually be in the RRA signed between registries and registrars. So first thing is we can check the requirement in a registry’s RRA. If the RRA requires a 30 day RGP, registrar should be abided by that rule. If not, they may have a compliance issue. In another word, if the registry requires a 30 RGP, the registrar should also provide a 30 day RGP. If they only provide 20 day for RGP, they may just breach the contract.

Please note, current registries may have different rules on RGP due to historical reasons. And you can find that in the policy. The first sentence of that policy is “With the exception of sponsored gTLD registries,” which means currently some gTLDs may have different rules.

And I have quoted the passages from that rules like this.

I asked a question because the below sentence is vague to a Registrar.

Should the Registrar allow 30 days redemption grace period to the Registrant? (We have thought this is right.. but some registrar doesn’t seem to manage the period like that)

Is it OK to manage the redemption grace period within the 30 days ? (In other words, Is it OK for the registrar to allow the redemption grace period only for 20 ?)

Redemption Grace Period

3.1. With the exception of sponsored gTLD registries, all gTLD registries must offer a Redemption Grace Period ("RGP") of 30 days immediately following the deletion of a registration, during which time the deleted registration may be restored at the request of the RAE by the registrar that deleted it. Registrations deleted during a registry's add-grace period, if applicable, should not be subject to the RGP.

3.2. During the Redemption Grace Period, the registry must disable DNS resolution and prohibit attempted transfers of the registration. ICANN-approved bulk transfers and permitted partial bulk transfers are not subject to the prohibition of attempted transfers. The registry must also clearly indicate in its Whois result for the registration that it is in its Redemption Grace Period.

3.3. Registrars must permit the RAE to redeem a deleted registration during RGP (if RGP is offered by the respective registry).

A registrar, in order to provide registration service to registrants, must sign the RRA with the relevant registry, in addition to the RAA with ICANN. Thus, more specific rules about RGP, usually are stated in RRA instead of RAA. And rules may vary slightly among registries due to legacy reasons.

I am very happy to share that we have Howard who has just joined the ICANN Asia-Pacific Operations looking at registrar services. He is on the CC list and I will leave it to him to give you more details. This is in addition to ICANN colleagues in Seoul ?C Kelly and Kang Soo.
